Our mother, Marilyn Kay, passed away on March 16 at the age of 87. She truly began her life's work when she founded The Reading Group, a nonprofit reading clinic for children with learning challenges, including dyslexia, which up to 20% of the population is estimated to have. Dyslexia makes it incredibly difficult to learn to read with standard classroom teaching techniques, so it is crucial that kids with dyslexia get specialized help.
This year, The Reading Group will celebrate 50 years of service and presence in the Champaign-Urbana and surrounding communities. They have a wonderful collection of talented and passionate educators doing amazing work with kids, just as our mother did. The Reading Group is beginning to partner with outstanding organizations like The Church of the Living God and The Don Moyer Boys' and Girls' Club to help grow their reach and impact in and beyond our communities, and to help fulfill our mother’s wish to better serve people of color.
Given that no one person could possibly fill mom's shoes, we think it is remarkable and wonderful that The Reading Group has continued past mom's retirement 18 years ago as Executive Director. It gave mom such great joy to see her work continued. We have faith that with the support of the community, The Reading Group can continue to serve and grow for 50 more years! We would be so grateful if you can help us honor our mother's work by supporting The Reading Group with a donation to The Reading Group 50th anniversary/Marilyn Kay Memorial Fundraiser today. Thank you!
